A shunt is a device that enables a sensitive meter (or circuit) to measure higher currents without the meter being required to pass all the load-current. It does this by providing a low-resistance path for a major proportion of the total electric current allowing it to pass around the meter in circuit.

Current shunts for typically used with metering and current control circuitry. Such shunts are typically a low-ohm high-precision resistor (with suitable power-handling) inserted in parallel with sensitive metering or control circuits.
